Turok: Evolution
GCN REVIEW by: Kazooie

The Turok series has always been hit or miss, the only reason the first title wasn't critically acclaimed is because of Golden eye. The second game was pretty good but was incredibly hard and the frame rate was horribly lagging. Rage Wars shouldn't have seen the light of day. The third game was good but short and didn't receive much hype. Finally the next installment in the hit or miss series is back, and in a big way.

The graphics in the new Turok are some of the best on Game Cube. The characters and creatures have been overhauled and there has been a great deal of attention paid to detail. Every creature looks alive and it's very cool. Also the environments are amazing, with thousands of things to interact with and see. You'll want to shoot everything to see what it does, but be careful because you might alert a very irritable guard and it can get ugly. I have to warn that they pay great attention to one detail, blood. There is enough blood in this game to flood Canada; it is gruesome but very cool. The last thing I want to mention is the death animations, think Perfect Dark but more accuracy in where you shoot. The gamecube version also has more colors, allowing the Turok game to graphically come alive. The frame rate is also at a consistent high most of the time, as there is hardly any slowdown during the game. The graphics are good for Game Cube and for a shooter.

The sound is amazing in this game. You hear the environment around you, and it is amazing but also chilling. You'll hear a breeze and then the next second you'll hear some thing in the grass, but you won't be able to tell if it's the wind or a pack of raptors, it's a cerebral assassin. The background music works in with what your doing, if you are fighting enemies it can be tense and panic like, if you are sneaking around it can be tense but menacing. The sound works together and couldn't be any better. One weapon to take note of is the mini gun - observe the sound it makes when you shoot it against the ground or at an enemy - very realistic. The footsteps of enemies can also be heard, truly giving you the feel of a dinosaur hunter. All in all, very good, did I mention that this game supports DPL II? All in all, this game's sound gives a very atmospheric touch - an intention conceived when the first Turok game was made but never realized till now.

Some people have a problem with control on the game, but I feel it's just right. If you've played Halo, a lot of the controls feel the same. The uses of the guns can take a while but once you find a feel of a gun it will become like your arm. It takes a little bit to get used to the controls but once you do you will be I dinosaur-hunting guru. Also the flying levels are real easy to control and have somewhat of a Star Fox 64 feel. Overall a good interface and it will become second nature.

This game is a prequel of sorts and it will explain a lot of questions raised in the last games. I don't want to reveal too much so I won't say more about the story for fans of the last games. I just want to add that some of the story gets confusing later on in the game and there were I few times I wasn't sure why I did what I did. The story is very solid most of the game.

This game is one of the toughest shooters out there. I'm not even halfway thorough the game, the dinosaurs are so relentless. I know a few shooter freaks might have an easy time with this one, but I'm a casual shooter game player so this one will take a little time. After you beat the game, get your friends over for the multi-player and you will expand your life span ten-fold. This is a very long and rewarding game.

This is so far the best shooter game for the Game Cube and the best game in the Turok series. A must buy for shooter fans and a must try for everyone else. I give Turok: Evolution for the GCN a 9/10 9/10
