Review By: Dastly75

Yes, its sad, Rare is leaving Nintendo Gamecube forever, Microsoft bought them out a few weeks back. Before Rare departed they left one last memory of their console goodness. The long awaited Star Fox Adventures. Where has this game been, where has Rare been lately? The last Rare game I have a fond memory of is Conker's Bad Fur Day which was horrendously unappreciated. Rare started work on this title way back. It was originally planned for release on the n64 but was then cancelled and decidedly put for release on the Gamecube. Original title was Dinosaur Planet later changed to Star Fox Adventures when Nintendo forced Rare to change the main character to Fox.

Graphics

To say the least about them, they are freaking phenomenal! First thing is the rendering of Fox's fur, which is the best thing since the squirrel. (Pardon the pun) It's very evident that this title was polished like the gem it is because they really pushed the gamecube hardware. There are some flaws though which occur rarely (pun#2). Frame rate drops occur randomly as does annoying "slow-motion effects." One thing different in this game, which separates it from others, is the voice cast. Unlike in SF64, you don't hear Slippy go, "I got one!"(Thank god) The voices are great and some of the best ever to grace a video game. The character's mouths also correspond well with the dialogue. Environments are lush and beautiful and so are the dinosaurs you will often find. Unfortunately, graphics may be the thing you enjoy most about this game.

Game play

Remember the layout for Zelda on the n64, if you do, this will be very familiar. Basically it's that classic setup which works well during battles and etc. Battles don't occur as much as you with think but when they do, you will wonder why they are so pointless. Sure you can find some grunts lying around but killing them isn't really necessary and is just a waste of time. The game play does get mildly fun when playing a Rare (pun#3) Arwing episode. There is a point where I got to ride a hovercraft! Wahoo! Wait a second; it was boring and quite hard at first. I mastered the hovercraft episode and then it was over before it even had a chance of being fun. If you like exploring long pointless caves, then this is perfect for you. Personally I enjoy the old star fox games, which had a more quickly paced arcade feel. Nevertheless, I can still say that it beats many other games in the entertainment factor like Quest64…(haha, what a BORING RPG!).

Other
Music returns from past tunes from the star fox series along with some new songs. Variety could be better but no one really expected anything much from this category anyways. Extras come in forms such as cheats, which require you to work for them. Working for them requires you to get money or scarabs as they are called in the game. Again I feel that this is a waste of time. This game is well polished though and feels like a whole game rather than a rushed for release title. It reaches a degree of quality, which is good to find in any game.
