Star Fox Adventures (2nd Opinion) Review by Paolo

Starfox’s first debut began in the Super Nintendo System with what seems to have been decades ago. It later made an astoundingly, colossal hit with the Nintendo 64 game system. In that game the purpose and aspiration was to cruise around in a renovated spaceship defeating the scum and evil monstrosities in the galaxy (Primarily Andross, the final boss). This is an extremely fascinating concept if you compare it to the Gameplay of the sequel for Gamecube, Starfox Dinosaur Planet. In Starfox Dinosaur Planet, that good old enchanting Fox McCloud receives a distress signal from a female fox in the galaxy. Analyzing the fact that taking this mission upon himself would allow him to keep maintaining his ship, he quickly, and without a doubt takes the mission.

Gameplay: Basically, Fox McCloud strolls around the enormous, semi-elegant Dinosaur Planet and with a staff he so valiantly receives, and occasionally a flame-shooter, tramples and defeats most of his enemies that try to cross his way. He can also summon or beckon his medium-sized, modest pet dinosaur to help him in battle (He can actually be quite useful). There are tons of adventures and repetition is something that is seldomly found in Starfox! There are a few bonuses and some secrets, but not enough. Starfox’s level of difficulty out of ten (ten being the hardest and one being the easiest) I would have to rate it a six or seven. The game was either a little to obvious or contained mysteries in which I would have to refer to a guide in order to progress. The action and fighting is poor. Defeating your enemies using your staff can get quite annoying and frustrating. All you do is repetitively press -A- and McCloud swings his staff back and forth, to and fro, until he incredibly promptly defeats one of his enemies. It can get irritating because there is no skill needed and you can’t really do appealing or gorgeous combinations. Repetition=Boredom. The other weapon you have is the flame-shooter! The typical gamer tends to think it’s going to work like a gun, somewhat like Metroid Prime, Goldeneye 007, Timesplitters, etc. Well these gamers are harshly mistaken. Sure it is a gun, but the aiming is absolutely atrocious, just dreadful! It takes a long time to aim at some of the artifacts, or items because when the aiming is at the right place, the gamer must do whatever possible to hold it perfectly still, if this isn’t achieved, it drastically moves somewhere else! Plus, you have limited ammo, I’d say like ten of the flame-filled shots, and then you have to go slay an energy producing plant to get more. Your other source of fighting is your pesky, medium-sized Dinosaur acquaintance who seemingly follows you throughout ninety-five percent of the game. His attacks are limited to about two or three, and their main purpose is for solving puzzles or getting past a barrier. When you summon him to battle he does just as much damage as you could do with two easy hits of your staff! Most of the time he even hits you with his own attack! Then you have to go find him slugs so he can charge up his energy. Well, now that the worst part is out of the way, the adventure is the priority. The enemies are limited to two or three major ones in the entire game. There aren’t many bosses at all, in fact the first one comes out when you’re around forty percent finished with the game. Don’t get me wrong though, the adventure is great! If you just ignore all the fighting (which unfortunately plays a big role) it is simply stupendous! It is so complex and it is nearly unachievable to strain to how long it is. After you finish one quest, there is always a pursuit for another one. One of the most thrilling concepts about it is that you very rarely stay in just one area for more than a minute! There are a few characters, though each play a humungous part. The game can provide you with a hint option, but if you try it isn’t that specific, but it can be very helpful at times. As for the old fans of the adventure, you do get to fly, but only in between worlds, which desolately rarely happens. I would have to say you fly about ten times in total.

Controls: As a gamer I feel strongly about controls. I believe if the controls are bad, the game goes down with it. The best games have smooth, creative, nice controls that don’t often leave you stuck or frustrated. Starfox, is just one of those games with nice controls, not the best, but nice. At the begging it can take a little getting used to, but after about an hour of play, your be cruising, and not bruising. A game with just so many options, is just so marvelous to see how the producers figured it all out. In Starfox Adventures you have a wide variation of moves and features that you need to utilize in order to move on to the next stage. For these options the yellow stick or C Stick was used. It was enormously clever and intellectual to use the C stick as a major function in the game. It has all been perfectly configured, using the small, often neglected keys like the control pad and the C stick. Below are the controls and configurations.

-A- The A button is used for choosing options, hitting with your staff, and talking to inhabitants. -B- The B button is used for going back to the previous page or previous thing. -X- The X button is used for choosing options and shooting with your flame-blaster. -Y- The Y button is used for accessing certain options and that’s about it. -L- The L button is used for aiming. -Control Pad + C Stick- The Control Pad is used for searching through the items and options you get to by using the C Stick. By using the C stick you access all the special features McCloud needs in order to proceed through the game. All in all I give this game’s control’s a nice and fair 8.5/10, truly beautiful!

Graphics: Graphics, probably one of the most important aspects in a game. It is incredibly vital for a game to have exceptional graphics! Of course if the Graphics are stupendous, and the gameplay and controls of the game are just horrible, then that’s something else worth looking into. Anyways, Starfox seems to have very well detailed graphics that just seem so amazingly attractive. It’s almost like it brings the world to life! Like you’re in it and playing. The Dinosaurs and all the characters seem very distinct and noticeable. There are very few times in where the setting became hard to see. Though this occurs seldomly, and scarcely, it could be disrupting to you and your play.

Sound: Well, as for Starfox’s common sound of smacking and pummeling enemies with your staff or just plainly walking and looking around, one can easily agree it is pretty well done and realistic. It fits in perfectly with what is going on, just flawlessly. The music sounds like you have an orchestra playing in your Gamecube and is just simply enchanting. It fits right in with what you want with the setting and is just so catchy.

Lasting Appeal: Starfox Adventures is a game that is very long and is tremendously predictable and boring when replayed. Though since it is extensive you may forget some ideas and concepts of the game, just the fact that you are going to have to get all your tools and items back and just plainly start all over, its depressing! It’s that type of game you may see a lot at stores under a “Previously Played” title because of its lasting appeal. After you have beaten the game there is but too minimum motivation to continue on and replay it. The producers should’ve worked harder in this area.

Storyline + Plot for All of You Who are Interested: Starfox Adventures’ storyline or plot is one twisted story. The main plot goes all the way back to the N64 days. In that exhilarating hit Fox McCloud is in a space ship and receives a mission. He travels through tons of different worlds and finally kills his worst enemy, ANDROSS! Or you think. Apparently in Starfox Adventures Dinosaur Planet he receives the distress signal from a bounty hunter, attractive female fox who was captured by the evil General Scales! Since McCloud needs money to maintain the ship, and the pay for his type of job isn’t a whole ton, this mission greatly excites him. He goes of and lands on the Dinosaur planet finding out that there are different species of Dinosaurs, some which are nice and some which aren’t. He finds out lots of information as he goes on and of course he proceeds ninety-five percent of the game with his little dinosaur disciple (Who is actually the prince of a certain species who travels with McCloud because he can obtain special powers and wants to use them to save his captured father, or the King of his tribe.) A few times in the game you go to talk with his mother, the Queen of their tribe and she tells you lots of valuable information. There are Spellstones which you must collect and set free. Confusing, weird, and it doesn’t follow up with itself. Original Starfox fans will ask “Is this Starfox Adventures, or a Zelda wannabe?”

Overall, Starfox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet receives an 8/10, with an epic, over-generously engaging adventure, but horrendous fighting. The music and sound is just something we can dig our ears into, and the graphics for Starfox is probably one of the only motivates for replaying Starfox. The storyline is confusing, and one might ask, “Is this Starfox, or Dinosaur Planet?” Rating

This game presents itself with crisp, smooth looking environments, and characters as well.

Graphics
The characters simply amaze me. Up close, you can see every little hair on Fox's body. These graphics will be stunning.
