![]() In the early 1990s, Nintendo's mascot, Mario, was the household name in videogames. If you played videogames, you owned Mario. Sega, the competition of Nintendo, needed a mascot for its Genesis system. They came up with Sonic, the blue blur. He was everything Mario wasn't. He was ''cool,'' and super fast. Now enter 2001. Sega releases Sonic Adventure 2 for the Sega Dreamcast. The game has great graphics, and super fast gameplay. But unfortunately, the Dreamcast was discontinued, so Sega decided to put Sonic on a new console. That console was Nintendo's new GameCube. To get Sonic acquainted with Nintendo fans, Sonic Team ported Sonic Adventure 2 to the Dreamcast, and renamed it Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. Sega didn't just slap the word battle to give the impression that it was a completely new game. No. You'll see. ![]() Sonic Adventure 2 is the best looking platformer ever. Forget Jak and Daxter. Forget Klonoa 2. Sonic Adventure 2 is the best looking plat former, which appears on the second least powerful next gen console, Dreamcast. Now the game gets ported to the second most powerful next gen console. And the game makes a GREAT transition. The game looks better than the Dreamcast counterpart. The textures are nicely done, and the game looks slightly more defined than the previous version. And the framerate keeps at a consistent 60 FPS. This is the best looking platformer, ever! Gameplay for Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is a mixed bag. The game is boring when you have to do hunting missions with either Knuckles or a bat. The game is somewhat fun when you are playing as Miles "Tails" Prower, or Dr. Eggman (known as Robotnick back in the Genesis and Saturn days). When you control them, you shoot the living heck out of all the robot enemies you see. The real fun gameplay is when you control Sonic, or Shadow. When you control them, the gameplay is super fast. You can play as Sonic on a surf board and go surfing on city streets, or you can plays as Shadow on his skates. You can do grinds, roll and do high jumps, and run from cars. That gameplay is extremely fun and exciting, and is what you expect from a traditional Sonic game.
The music is great to hear. The Soundtrack from Sonic's first missions sounds incredibly cool, but then the music can get extremely repetitive after awhile. The music is really nothing special, but nothing boring, too. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle controls like a dream. A jumps, and B does Sonic's roll. The controls are extremely easy to learn, and take NO time whatsoever. The replay value is high indeed. Once you finish the Hero, play as the Dark! Once you play both games, take up the extra 2 player games added into the GameCube version. Or try raising the Chao with your GameBoy Advance! The possibilities are worthwhile, and will keep you busy until Sonic Adventure 3 comes out! Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is the definition of a platformer. The game is fun, and the replay value is extremely high. Although a great Dreamcast port, GameCube owners who never owned the Dreamcast version will not want to skip this game over. People who played Sonic Adventure 2 on Dreamcast should at least give this a rental. The Battle half of the game is really not that much worth it. As you can tell this Sonic game is an awesome one to have for the GCN and is a must-buy!I hope you enjoy it like I did!
