Burnout 3: Takedown Review by: Nathan and Nick

Introduction
The Burnout series in every aspect is not the same franchise it used to be. Now don’t think that’s a bad thing, it’s really a good thing. It’s not the same franchise namely because Criterion has the best publisher out there, which is EA. Criterion has created one of the most impressive arcade racers yet to date. You never played a racer like Burnout 3, and it would be terrible to not take advantage if this one of a kind game. Criterion and EA have amped up the racing game genre with this one. Burnout 3 offers insane crashes, high speeds, one of a kind cars and some pretty 'sick' modes. You will be completely blown away with Burnout 3's Crash mode, which we will get to a little later. Criterion and EA have created a whole new style of racing in Burnout 3.

Gameplay

One word to describe Burnout 3 in a nutshell is ‘Take Down’. I say this because in Burnout 3 you don’t just get boost for crossing on coming traffic and getting near misses, oh no…now you can take down your opponents by side swiping them and ramming them onto on coming traffic and getting 1 set of boost or 2 sets of boost or even 3. This feature is really nifty because now instead of just having the boost for a while; now you can have it for nearly the whole race.

Burnout 3 World Tour- When you go into Burnout 3 World Tour you will be guided to a map of the United States from here you can navigate (if unlocked) to Europe and the Far East. In each of these 3 areas you go to events and have a chance to get Gold, Silver, or of course bronze. In each of those three locations you will have races such as: Race, Crash, Special Event, Face off, Road Rage, etc. In race obviously you will race for first place. In Crash you will…well crash, you try to create the most damage you can while trying to pickup special things on the road such as money to add to your damage total or a 4x handicap to quadruple your score at the end. In Face off you will go head to head verse another car he will crash into you and you will crash into him until someone crosses the finish first. In Road-Rage you will try to knock or ‘Take Down’ as many cars as possible; this is one of my favorite race types.

Single event- In Single Event there are 4 modes Race, Time, Attack, Road Rage and of course crash mode. First you need to know that World Tour events will allow cars and events to be unlocked in Single Event. Some of the best modes in Single Event are Road Rage and Crash mode. In Road Rage you will do what the games says ‘Take Down’ cars. Take downs are done when you drive recklessly into your other opponents to make them flip out, if done you will get credit for a take down, in Road Rage you want to do as many of these as possible.

You can’t forget crash mode. In Crash mode, there are 100 levels you can unlock. When you get gold in Crash levels in Burnout World Tour, they will show up in your Crash mode. Crash mode is one of my favorite modes. There are so many different types of Crash levels, such as: Cross Traffic, and Twister. In Twister you can go off these ramps and into slow motion where you can control you car. Not just in Twister can you go in slow motion, in any mode when you crash you can go in slow motion to do this hit the A button, now you can even rack up more damage then you ever thought possible. Also as I said before you can pick up things on the road before you crash, like 2x or 4x score enhancers or a boast handicap or even cash. Crash mode will have you itching for more.

Multiplayer- Multiplayer consists of Road Rage and single player race along with a few more modes. In Multiplayer you can have up to two players. Don’t worry you can go on Xbox Live as well, but we will talk about that later. In Multiplayer there is also an event called Party Crash Which is a player swapping event that will go up to 8 players. Which ever player has the most damage totals wins. Team Crush is a co-op mode which allows two players to work together in finding different routes to create the biggest crashes. Last we have Double Impact; this is where to players compete for crash damage bank.

Xbox Live- Xbox live will support up to 6 players in head to head racing and up to 8 can go ahead and participate in Party Crash. You also have OptiMach and Quick Match. This will help you find and aid in your way to create a match or get in one. There is one thing on Xbox Live you can’t do that you can do in and mode on Burnout 3 and that is Impact Time. Impact time is where you can control your car in slow motion after you crashed so you can rack up more points, I’m guessing they took this out to keep the servers running smooth with less lag.

Graphics:

If I were to sum up the graphics in one word, it would be “Wow”. In Burnout 3 Takedown the graphics are far better then in the other two games that came out. The cars are nice and shiny; the backgrounds actually move as well (clouds for example). The reflections on the cars are pretty realistic, but not quite as good as in Project Gotham Racing 2. The structures and buildings are fairly detailed nothing exceptional however. The sun light and shadowing is fairly in perspective with trees, buildings and signs. The graphics look very good especially with the pretty high framerate and resolution and also the blur effect when your car goes into a boost is very nicely done.

The crash sequences are the best I have seen in any racing game ever! Absolutely stunning how each crash looks much different then the last. The work that went into the crash sequences is something else and I mean something else, it blows other racers out of the water by a good 100 feet. The fact that your car goes past 200 MPH on packed city streets makes the speed factor incredible. This might be one of the best looking racing game up to date.

Audio:

The sound effects in Burnout 3 definitely work with this games style. The engine and exhaust noises fit well with the game also. When you shift hard the gearbox makes a “thud” and in my opinion it fits well with this game, I wouldn’t say it fits with most other racing games. When you reach 180 you start to whip by buildings and other cars and hear a whooshing wind sound which is very realistic. What makes the sound above all other racing games is the fine detail put into it. The tire squeals, whooshing sound, engine and gear box when shifting ties everything together to make the sound effects the very best and above any racing game.

Burnout 3’s sound track is ordinary, and when I say ordinary I mean it. The songs are just average and pulled out randomly from the music realm. The songs of course used are from the developer’s personal favorites. But that’s to be expected; the songs do fit in well with the overall feel of Burnout 3. Of course, there would be other songs in the soundtrack that I would have added, but hey, that’s what the personal music feature on the Xbox is for; so, just open your favorite track and crank up the tunes. Takedown also uses a radio quality with its own station called “Crash FM”. The jockey gets annoying so you will end up turning him off, trust me on this one. The “Radio quality” really adds nothing to the game, but yet somehow fits in. Just rip your own tunes and you will enjoy the audio aspect of Burnout 3.

Overall

Burnout 3 is one of those racers you don’t see too much of. Criterion has created a new style of racing, and has changed the whole racing genre. You got online play, 480p support, amazing graphics, Oh and what about the custom sound tracks. Burnout 3 didn’t leave out any features plus it’s so addicting to play, what more can you ask for go pick up a copy and see for yourself what Burnout 3 is all about.
