Axis and Allies Review:
By: Nick and Nathan Petersen Having not played the original Axis and Allies game I didn’t know what to expect from this PC title. So when I heard TimeGate had gotten full license over Axis and Allies I gave it a shot. Not knowing what to expect I put it in and found myself, three hours later, done with the first mission in campaign. However, I was so hooked in it I decided to keep playing even though I beat the mission. Although after playing a lot longer I got a little tired of it and decided to call it a day. But enough of what I thought let’s get to the meat and potatoes here.
![]() First off the gamer has three options to choose from on the main menu. First off is the campaign mode. However in campaign mode you have more options, you can either be an Allie or an Axis such as Japan etc. I thought that was really different, although that is what the title means of course. Anyway the missions are drawn from real historical battles that are very quite accurate. Next is the custom battle mode which lets you choose from a variety of terrain as well as different opponents. Now comes the real skill or down right historically correct mode, which is the WWII mode. WWII mode lets you move freely and fight in real time battles. Now that we have the modes listed how about the last mode, multiplayer. Multiplayer isn’t a plus in this game, your limited to only custom battles fought on random maps from the campaign mode.
![]() Rather then building in this game you will spend more time making a head quarters for the total amount of troops/corps, as well as for the 4 main companies you want to build such as airborne or infantry etc. From there you have other buildings to choose from like motor pools and on and on. Another cool thing about the buildings is you can un-pack them and re-pack them else where they are 100% mobile. This re-ensures that you can move your buildings away from enemy fire. Now don’t be obligated to move your building’s if you don’t have to, it’s a feature there that’s just nice to have. About the headquarters, if you don’t plan to move it you should note that each Corps HQ makes a zone of supply in which damages friendly units are instantaneously repaired if you will. However if you want to make this zone bigger build oil depots and additional ammo. You will find yourself making the Zone a lot bigger if you do what I aforementioned.
![]() The game is rather repetitive; you do the same old thing with every mission. In my opinion the campaign mode feels a bit weak, you can only attack one enemy territory at a single time. I thought it would be sweet if you could attack more then one with a different squadron. What I thought was cool about the game was that you could be a verity of different nations such as Germany, Japan and America. This game is just in time for the holidays and a great strategy game for those strategy game buffs. |
